Curious kids at Ambury Farm day
13 October 2011
A kauri dieback stand was held at the Ambury Farm day this year. This annual event is a celebration of farming and outdoor recreation for all Aucklanders. Sunny weather saw a brilliant turn out, the crowd entertained by farming and recreational displays, demonstrations and wood chopping, sheep shearing, face painting, butter and felt making, farm animal petting and feeding and more!
At the kauri dieback stand, children were invited to view the
spores of kauri dieback through a microscope. This was the first
community event where the microscope has been trialed and was a
great success. Spores that are invisible to the naked eye were
magnified by 400 times - the fact that such tiny organisms can kill
our biggest trees really hit home with the visitors to the
stand.
Look out for microscopes at our stands in the future.
