Hunua 4WD event
30 October 2011
On the 30th of October 2011, Hunua School ran a 4WD Fundraising Safari in the Hunua ranges near Auckland.
The event was a great success with eighty 4-wheel-drive vehicles
and 270 participants raising over $6000 for the school.
The event ran through paddocks on private farm land and along
roads through native bush in Auckland council park land. The
Hunua ranges are one of the few large areas of kauri with no kauri
dieback in the Auckland region so strict cleaning procedures were
put in place for this event. 4WD vehicles and machinery can easily
move soil between areas of kauri and may spread kauri dieback
disease if care is not taken. All vehicles arrived clean for this
event and were sprayed with trigene disinfectant as a further
precaution.

The spray unit developed for this purpose may be further
developed by the kauri dieback management programme for wider use.
This day has really shown that with a little care and effort we can
still enjoy kauri forest without putting the trees at risk.
